Hi, I’m dylan hanson, the founder of train to remain. How i got to fitness coaching was not the conventional route to say the least.
I always enjoyed being outdoors and moving my body. From a kid playing neighorhood basketball from sunrise to sunset, to being out on a boat fishing, I try to live my life outside as much as possible.
growing up in louisiana, i grew up in sports – specifically baseball and running. Throughout my youth and high school, baseball played a major role in my life while also dipping my toes in the cross country sport for a stint.
Fast forward to august of 2017, I was a freshman in college and had no idea of what i wanted to do for a career. I just knew i needed to get out of the classroom and go live my calling. I had an intense desire at the time to go live in another country to see the world beyond louisiana, so that’s what i did. I dropped out of college and in May 2018, i was on a one-way flight to New zealand. I had secured a job on a ski resort prior to leaving, and that was the only thing i knew. I met amazing people and had life-changing experiences at my time in new zealand. I even bought a converted van and did the whole hippy, off-grid thing.
In feburary 2019, I found my way back to louisiana, more lost than ever on what my future looked like. i just knew i needed to care about my work. Since health and fitness were important in my life, i decided to go experience what it’s like to grow my own food and live off the land. I found a local farm in Louisiana and lived there for a few months, learning how to grow food from seed to harvest. While i placed importance on local, organic food, i learned quickly that farming was not my calling. i yearned for more mountains and adventure.
in november 2019, i found myself on my one-way flight to Jackson hole. i knew this was where i belonged. i worked on the ski resort and met amazing friends. we snowboarded as much as possible, chasing powder days and going backcountry. that first season, i logged a total of 105 days on the mountain. a couple years of ski bumming and working as a server at night to make ends meet, i realized the ski-bum lifestyle wasn’t very sustainable.
in june 2021, i had a mutual friend who was opening up a personal training studio in jackson and wanted me to be his first employee. i was hesitant, but i knew this was right for me. my first coaching gig was at the local ymca coaching a “ski Fit” bootcamp. my first class had 40 attendees.. talk about imposter syndrome. i felt more confident each class and eventually i found my voice and looked forward to the class. I stuck with it and eventually had a full schedule of one-on-one clients.
another important thing that came out of living in jackson was… a girl. my roommate had a friend visit us, madeleine, and we hit it off instantly. still together today, we just hit 4 years of being together.. anyway, back to the story.
in may 2022, we decided to move to madeleine’s hometown, mount Shasta, ca to change things up and be closer to friends and family. I instantly secured a coaching position at a local crossfit gym, and this was really where i fell in love with coaching. The community there was welcoming and provided a space where i could train whenever and as often as i wanted. i coached between 3-5 classes per day and eventually led my own “ski-fit” bootcamps there, advertising with flyers around town. there was a coaches workout everyday at 10am where the other coaches and i would push each other. during the winter, i worked part-time as a snowboard instructor on the local ski hill. around 1.5 years in to being in mount shasta, madeleine’s work moved us back to the south, my neck of the woods.. sort of.
in september 2023, we moved to austin, tx. The first few months were hard trying to find a decent coaching job. I found a temporary one at a local group class circuit training type of gym, but i was not fully invested and i knew there was something better for me. I stumbled upon a mobile fitness training job listing and figured i’d apply. i ended up getting the position and started traveling to client’s homes.
fast forward to today, and i have launched my own mobile gym business. this is only the beginning and i’m beyond excited to create more of an impact on the community here in austin.
i truly believe intentional movement has the power to ignite positive change within us – physically, emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually.
